Effect of single and multiple pregnancies on performance of primiparous and multiparous cows

چکیده
Data on 393 002 parturitions and performance in the following production cycle were collected from the SYMLEK database for 145 457 Polish Holstein-Friesian cows representing the active population in the Pomorze and Kujawy regions. The animals first calved during 2000–2012 and were used or culled by the end of 2013. GLM and FREQ procedures of the SAS package were used for the statistical calculations. The frequency of twin and triplet births depended on the cow’s age (0.64 % in primiparous and 2.88 % in multiparous cows), calving season (1.79 % in winter, 2.41 % in summer), previous lactation milk yield (increase of 2.15 to 3.73 % with increasing milk production level), and year of calving of primiparous cows (increase from 0.43 % during 2000–2003 to 0.78 % during 2010–2012). Dams of twins were superior to dams of singles in terms of milk yield, but a significant difference was manifest only in multiparous cows. Despite the higher perinatal mortality of the twins and triplets (especially those born to primiparous cows), multiple pregnancy resulted in a greater number of calves born compared to single pregnancy. A negative effect of multiple pregnancies was a decrease in fertility, especially in multiparous cows (e.g. calving interval was longer by 18 days, reproductive rest period by 9 days, and service period by 10 days, while services per conception increased by 0.15). In addition, twin pregnancy (especially in heifers) and triplet pregnancy (especially in cows) considerably decreased chance of survival until the next calving.

Association of Birth Type and Pregnancy Type with Lactation Performance and Lactation Curve in Holstein Dairy Cows in Iran
The association of birth type (single vs. double) and pregnancy type (single vs. double) with lactation performance and lactation curve was investigated in Holstein cows in Iran. Data of 243298 lactations on 138021 cows in 261 herds collected during January 2000 to December 2012 were used. The average twinning rate was 3.64% and ranged from 1.44% (primiparous) to 5.41% (multiparous). Factors as...
متن کاملRelationship between Insulin to Glucagon Ratio and Metabolic Parameters in Primiparous and Multiparous Dairy Cows in Transitional Period
In order to investigate the relationship between insulin to glucagon ratio and metabolic factors in transitional period of dairy cows, 28 cows heifers with body condition score of 3.25- 3.75 were selected. Dairy cows received close up diet, from 21 days prepartum until parturition and lactation diet according to nutritional requirements after parturition. Blood was sampled at 10 days before and...
متن کاملEffect of yeast culture (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) on adaptation of cows to postpartum diets and on lactational performance.
Multiparous (n = 26) and primiparous (n = 18) Holstein cows were fed prepartum and postpartum total mixed diets that were, or were not, supplemented with a yeast culture (YC) for approximately 23 d prepartum and 56 d postpartum. Multiparous cows supplemented with YC selected a prepartum diet higher in CP than did unsupplemented cows, although prepartum performance of cows of both parities, as a...

The effect of parity (multiparous vs primiparous) and body condition score (BCS; <3.0 or > or =3.0, lean vs fat) at parturition on metabolic and endocrine profiles from 1 month before to 2 months after parturition were studied in 42 Holstein cows grazing on improved pastures. BCS and milk production were determined every 2 weeks. Non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), beta-hydroxy-butyrate (BHB), i...

Brangus cows (n = 29) were used in three experiments to evaluate the effects of parity (multiparous vs. primiparous) and potential genetic merit for milk production (high vs. low) on forage intake during late gestation, early lactation, and late lactation. Cows were selected for milk production based on their sire's EPD for milk production (MEPD). Cows had ad libitum access to (130% of previous...
